Well today was a real mixture of activities. We started out by a very sedate (well sedate for some of us) stroll through the Ladybird Johnson Wildflower center. The boys were convinced it would be very boring, but actually found more of interest than they expected. Highlights included seeing a moth and chrysalis up close, daring each other to touch the prickly pear cacti without getting stuck (I only had to remove one cactus spine) and dashing up the 60 or so steps to the observation tower multiplte times, with me huffing and puffing behind them. Brent very astutely noticed that it would not make a good castle tower in spite of its appearance, because the staircase winds the wrong way and defenders would not be able to easily draw their swords with the right hands. I'm not sure if I'm impressed with his logic or disturbed by his bellicose frame of mind.
After our sedate morning we left Grandma and the littlest Bute at the hotel for resting/napping and headed out to the Canyonlands Preserve, a natural watershed near our old apartment where you can hike along Bull Creek and swim/wade in the water. I was anticipating some splashing and maybe some wading, but we wound up with a full blown creek hike, some rock climbing and swinging off a rope into a natural pool. This was all highly nervewracking as only two of the five boys could be classified as strong swimmers and one is a complete non swimmer. Nevertheless it was quite a change of routine from hotel swimming pools and plodding through museums.
