Well, the first couple of days of our big South by Southwest trip involved driving rain and temperatures in the 30's. BRRR! We could have stayed in Ohio. But we did get to have a wonderful visit with Jeff's cousin and her family in Nashville, enjoying their hospitality on a very cold and rainy day. We then started working our way further south on the Natchez Trace Parkway. It is a National Park which follows the route of what was originally an Indian Trace and later became a National Road. In spite of a considerable amount of mud and the miserable weather the kids showed a remarkable amount of enthusiasm for hopping in and out of the car at various stops to see the places where travellers staying in the early 1800's, where they forded rivers and what the original trail looked like. My enthusiasm began to wane somewhat for loading them in and out of the car and cleaning up the mud, but all in all I was impressed with how much they got out of it. We had an audio driving tour which was keyed to the mile markers and the boys were responsible to keep track of the mile markers. They began in their best "robot voices" to call out
"mile marker detected... scanning... mile marker 213... start tape NOW!"
Much better than whining "Are we there yet?"
