Freedom trail

Well we set out to walk the entire Freedom Trail today. Over 3 miles of winding through Boston, viewing cemeteries, churches and meeting halls. I was really proud of all the kids, even the littlest legs made it with very little complaining. We actually ran out of time and did not make it to the last stop, the Bunker Hill Monument, so we will have to finish tomorrow.



If you have never done it, the Freedom Trail is a red path marked with paint or bricks which winds past Boston's most famous sites connecting with Revolutionary War period. Th younger kids took the following the path very seriously. When Bute6 encountered a pan handler standing on the path, she just stood there and waiting like the Southbound Zack, until he finally moved out of her way! I actually did not find many of the early points very interesting, although just appreciating the architecture was worth the walk. I also thought that Quincy Market, where all the guide books say to eat, was overrated and overpriced (North Market in Columbus is more interesting and not nearly so crowded). You cannot even catch a glimpse of Paul Revere's house without paying admission (Freedom isn't free, I guess)


But after that we went on to the North Church (of "one if by land, two if by sea" fame) and then the USS Constitution which was well worth the wait for the guided tour, it was both fascinating and inspiring.



At this point it the Bunker Hill Monument was closed for the day and we were at least 2 miles from our car parked on Boston Commons. None of our guide books gave us any help, but the friendly tour guide told us that we were right next to the ferry, which for a reasonable price (kids were free!) would take is more than half way back to our car.

All in all a great day of site seeing. Definitely feel like we have "done" the most famous parts of Boston!
