More San Francisco

Our second day in San Francisco we took a cable car ride to the port. I had seen pictures of the famous hills, but was completely unprepared to actually ride them in a cable car. It was more like a slow roller coaster. And they let several of the boys ride on the outside of the cable car, with no safety precautions other than a gruff "hang on!" and "don't lean out" when we passed only inches from the other cable cars. And our cable got hung up and we had to get pushed up a hill by a diesel. But the views were spectacular and no one fell off.

After fortifying with some Ghirardelli hot chocolate (or ice cream) the kids and I headed off to Pier 39, while Jeff and Peg went in search of an Irish coffee. Brent was the primary planner for this phase of the trip and he had scene a mirror maze which he very much wanted to try. As it turns out they spent an hour or more in the maze having a fabulous time, while I contentedly read by book in the sunshine.

After a look at the sea lions, the shadows were deepening and the breeze was coming up. We decided to grab a quick bite to eat and head for home. Alas, there was contingent of hopelessly provincial people who wanted burgers and fries, but the rest of us stopped for oysters and crab at the Fisherman's Wharf.

The return cable car ride was much colder after a long wait. Bute3 was hanging on the very front of the cable car and I feared his hands would get to cold he would fall off. But we made it back uneventfully.

Our long time family friend then joined us for a late dinner and some time spent catching up since he has been on the West Coast for the last 18 months.
